Fun
We are all here to have fun!
Learning
No matter where we are on our journey, there is always something we can learn and always something we can teach.
Trying new things can be frustrating, especially when we are used to knowing what is going on and not struggling. Mistakes will be made. Give yourself and others the grace to make mistakes.
Be encouraging of people trying new things and offer constructive feedback when solicited.
Welcome
No one turned away for lack of funds or skill.
We do still need money to rent the space and pay for the insurance required by the space, so we ask for donations.
This dance series is meant to try new things and is not representative of contra dance. We encourage those unfamiliar with the form to try BIDA on first, third, and fourth Sundays in Porter Square, or other dances in the area.
Goals
Fulfill our values for all.
Provide a low stakes environment for...
New Callers to learn and practice calling to live music and dancers and get feedback, as well as mentorship opportunities between dances.
Less-New Callers to try something new that may not be ready or appropriate for a regular contra dance.
Choreographers to test their dances to live music and dancers and get feedback on them, whether or not they are also callers.
New Dance Musicians to learn to play for contra dances in an open band with live calling and dancing.
Less-New Dance Musicians to practice band leadership.
New Bands to play for a few dances of live calling and dancing.
Provide a unique and fun opportunity for dancers to be part of the creative magic, by dancing and giving feedback when solicited.
Policies
We use gender free terminology and dance mostly contra dances. See our policies page for details.
